Medicare counselors provide objective, accurate, and confidential assistance to Medicare beneficiaries by appointment in the VAS office, at locations where seniors gather, or at local businesses. New volunteers complete a two-day initial training, with a one-day update training held each spring and fall for existing volunteers. Beyond that, volunteers choose their level of involvement.
Potential volunteers must:
- provide information for a background check
- be able to navigate the internet at an intermediate level
- committ to serve in the position for a minimum of one year

Description
Volunteers Assisting Seniors (VAS), a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization, provides information, advocacy and access to community resources for senior citizens living in Douglas, Sarpy, Dodge, Washington and Cass counties. Originally created by the Junior League in 1977, services are provided by over 40 trained volunteers, all of whom are age 55 and older.
