The Assabet River NWR Visitor Center (Center) is a state of the art "green" building that offers the local community and tourists the opportunity to learn more about local wildlife and habitats, as well as the United States Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS). The Center is the primary location refuge visitors can obtain information about the Refuge, as well as the Eastern MA NWR Complex and the National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS). The Center also houses interactive, hands-on educational exhibits, a multi-purpose meeting room, and the Friends Group nature store. The trails are open year-round with Center hours of Thursday - Sunday, 10am-4pm.
Role of a "Nature Guide"
{All year round opportunity}
- New volunteers are required to shadow an experienced volunteer at the front desk for at least 2 hours and shadow at least one of our public programs/event
- A wildlife or natural resource based knowledge is not preferred
- Coordinate and/or lead public nature/outdoor programs
- Engage and work with multiple audiences from seniors, children, adults, and/or families
- Program can be a special interest ie - plants, painting, biking but relate back to nature/outdoors
- Engage visitors at the visitor center by leading walks on trails and tours of the exhibits
- Assists with refuge hosted events and local community events
- Coordinates the strategic, operational and logistical activities necessary for event planning
- Assists with doing outreach for events/programs
- Minimum of one program/event per season
- Able to work independently and with staff
- Possess a friendly demeanor
Time Commitment Required

Description
Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge encompasses 3.5 square miles located within the towns of Hudson, Maynard, Stow and Sudbury. Formerly part of Fort Devens, this area was known as the Sudbury Training Annex. The U.S. Army transferred 2,230 acres to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the fall of 2000. Our primary purpose is to manage these lands for migratory bird conservation.
Assabet River is one of eight refuges within the Eastern Massachusetts National Wildlife Refuge Complex, which is headquartered out of Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge and located at 73 Weir Hill Road, Sudbury, Massachusetts, 01776.
