Samaritans of New York operates the city’s 24-hour suicide prevention hotline. Last year, we answered over 82,000 hotline calls. Samaritans is part of a well-established international network of 400 centers in 42 countries where over 20,000 volunteers provide crisis response and emotional support services to people who are in distress, depressed and suicidal.

Almost anyone who finds themselves facing some overwhelming obstacle or personal tragedy needs help getting through their moment of crisis. At Samaritans of NYC, our caring volunteers respond to people of all backgrounds: teenagers, the elderly, people dealing with chronic and terminal illnesses like cancer or AIDS; victims of violence, bullying and sexual abuse; the homeless, unemployed, veterans; those with sexual identity issues, who are trying to cope with stigma, who are hesitant to seek help.

The work is challenging, the training intensive and the experience extremely rewarding! You must be focused, disciplined and keep the commitments you make. This is serious work; you’ll be joining a group of dedicated volunteers from NYC’s diverse communities who work together in a supportive environment in a convenient Village location.

Volunteer requirements:

  • Must be at least 21
  • Good English speaking + written skills
  • Willing to work as part of a collaborative team
  • Available to donate:
    • 1 weekday morning, afternoon, evening or weekend shift a week
    • 1 overnight shift a month
  • No experience necessary!

Description

Samaritans is a non-religious, non-profit organization that runs NYC's confidential, 24-hour crisis response hotline staffed entirely by trained volunteers who provide emotional support to people who are depressed, overwhelmed or in crisis; as well as support groups for those who have lost a loved one to suicide and public education programs that raise awareness around suicide and the keys to its prevention.
