Would you like to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Oregon's low-income Latino families? You don't need experience, only the desire to help!
By volunteering just five hours a week during tax season you can provide a vital service and in turn an important step towards economic security to those most in need. You will also learn a useful skill, gain a meaningful new experience and become a part of a great team of like-minded people!
El Programa Hispano Católico is a non-profit organization providing quality social services to low-income Latinos in the Portland metropolitan area. Through considerable volunteer support and dedication we offer free tax preparation to the community, providing taxpayers a trustworthy, culturally-specific alternative to unlicensed tax preparers and to paying tax preparation costs they cannot afford. Last season our volunteers helped over 1,000 low-income taxpayers secure over $2 million in refunds and in saved preparation fees. This season we aim to grow our volunteer team in order to meet the increasing demand for this invaluable service and we need your help! You do not need prior tax knowledge, we provide you with free training!
We offer volunteer opportunities in the following capacities depending on your interest and availability:
Tax Preparer: Take our free training and learn a useful new skill! Certify to prepare basic personal tax returns with IRS software. Must have intermediate to high level of Spanish. No experience required. Free 30-hour training provided for varying schedules throught December and January.
Intake Assistant: Don't have time for our 30-hour training but still want to help? You can assist taxpayers with IRS and agency intake forms! Must have intermediate to high level of Spanish. No experience required. Free 3-hour training provided in January.
Interpreter: Are you an Interpreter wanting to further develop your skill? Provide interpretation services for our taxpayers! Interpreter training and previous experience preferred. Free 3-hour volunteer program training provided in January.
Quality Review: Do you have tax experience, or know someone that does? No Spanish required! Our Quality Review position's main role is to ensure high-quality, accurate preparation and is crucial to the success of our program. Continuing Education (CE) credit is available for your volunteer service hours. Required training depends on level of experience.
