Learn about taxes, help people in need!

Would you like to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Oregon's low-income Latino families? You don't need experience, only the desire to help!

Through considerable volunteer support El Programa Hispano Católico in Gresham offers free tax preparation to the Latino community, providing taxpayers a culturally-specific alternative to unlicensed preparers and paying to prepare their basic tax returns. Each season our volunteers assist 1,000 low-income taxpayers secure over $2 million in refunds and with your help we can continue this success! By taking our free training and volunteering just four hours per week during tax season you will provide an invaluable service and in turn an important step towards economic security to those most in need. You will also learn a useful skill, gain a meaningful new experience and become a part of a great team of like-minded people!

Trainings offered in December and January, with volunteer service running January 22nd to April 15th. Evening and weekend shifts available. We offer the following positions depending on volunteer interest and availability:

Tax Preparer: Take our free training and learn a useful new skill! Certify to prepare basic personal tax returns with IRS software. Must have high level of Spanish, English and computer skills. No experience required. Free 30-hour training provided over four Saturdays December 28th to January 18th 8:30am-4:00pm.

Intake Assistant: Don't have time for our 30-hour training but still want to help? You can assist taxpayers with IRS and agency intake forms! Must have high level of Spanish. No experience required. Free 3-hour training provided in January.

Interpreter: Are you an Interpreter wanting to further develop your skill? Provide interpretation services for our taxpayers! Interpreter training and previous experience preferred.

Quality Review: Do you have tax experience, or know someone that does? No Spanish required! Our Quality Review position's main role is to ensure high-quality, accurate preparation and is crucial to the success and increased capacity of our program. Continuing Education (CE) credit is available for your volunteer service hours. Required training depends on level of experience.

This program is completely volunteer-based--the more volunteers we receive the more taxpayers we are able to help! Orientations are taking place throughout November into mid-December. Training spaces can fill quickly, please contact our Site Coordinator Karen Keating at your earliest convenience at kkeating@elprograma.org with any questions you may have and to schedule an orientation. We look forward to hearing from you!
