Canal Alliance

For 35 years, Canal Alliance has been a nonprofit champion of immigrants who are challenged by a lack of resources and an unfamiliar environment. We believe that everyone has the right to achieve their dreams. Every day, Canal Alliance educates, empowers and supports motivated immigrants to best meet their unique needs - from putting food on the table to becoming American citizens to gaining critical English language skills and graduating from college. Because when we support immigrants, Marin becomes a place where everyone can live, work and succeed. Each year, Canal Alliance collaborates with over 40 agencies and engages 500 volunteers to impact more than 4,000 youth, adults and families.

Food Pantry and Open Market Assistants

Overview: Canal Alliance Food Pantry and Open Market offers fresh produce and packaged foods for about 350 families in the Canal neighborhood each Tuesday. Volunteers will provide support in unloading food from trucks, stocking shelves, interacting and handing out food to clients in the walk-through system, and takedown as the Open Market closes. This is a great opportunity for individuals, families and volunteer groups to encounter and interact with the motivated immigrants and the families that Canal Alliance serves. Spanish speaking ability is nice but not required; more than anything we need people who are friendly, patient, energetic, and committed to helping others in a cultural diverse environment. Middle and High school students are welcome and we exhort them to complete at least 10 hours per month. Safe food handling principles will be provided by Canal Alliance staff.

Date/Times Available: Every Tuesday all year long from 7:30 am to 1:00 pm.

Ages: Volunteers of all ages are welcome. Youth under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult 21 years or older.

  • Spanish skills preferred but not required. Good opportunity to learn or practice Spanish.
  • We strongly encourage all volunteers to stay at least 3 hours per shift.
  • Cultural competence in working with diverse populations, including communities of color, immigrants and persons of various ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, health status, and abilities.
