Our volunteer program needs your help! Formerly homeless and low income residents are eager to work with you to improve their literacy skills to help them increase their self-sufficiency! Please read on and contact us today at volunteer@LIHI.org !
Resourceful and dependable volunteers like you provide our residents with one-on-one reading assistance and ESL tutoring.
As a volunteer, you will help formerly homeless and low-income families and individuals become more self-sufficient by working with them to practice English language literacy and/or ESL. You will spend one 1-hour session each week with a resident at one of LIHI’s computer labs or nearby libraries and work with them to develop their reading and comprehension skills. You will also spend some time each week planning and finding resources relevant to your sessions.
Responsibilities:
- Commit to volunteering with one resident for 1 hour per week for at least three months
- Spend approximately 1 hour each week planning and preparing for the session
- Develop a plan with the resident for each session, depending on their skill level
- Keep brief records of your activity during each session
Skills and Requirements:
The volunteer should have good working knowledge of grammar and syntax in English. Good verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Experience with teaching and working with low-income and/or formerly homeless adults preferred. Background check required.
Time Commitment: 2 hours per week for the duration of three months.
Location and Working Conditions:
You will be assigned to meet with a resident either in one of our computer labs/community rooms in a housing site in Seattle where computers are accessible to all residents, or in a neighborhood library.
Time commitment & schedule
One 1-hour window Monday through Friday between 9am and 5:00pm. Minimum 3-month commitment required. Additionally, you will spend approximately 1 hour each week planning your sessions, finding resources, etc.

Mission Statement
The Low Income Housing Institute develops, owns and operates housing for the benefit of low-income, homeless and formerly homeless people in Washington state; advocates for just housing policies at the local and national levels; and administers a range of supportive service programs to assist those we serve in maintaining stable housing and increasing their self-sufficiency.
Description
LIHI develops and provides affordable housing to 4,000+ low income, homeless and formerly homeless people, including families. In 2019, an estimated 11,199 people experienced homelessness in King County alone. Many of LIHI housing projects focus on transitioning families and individuals out of homelessness, including chronically homeless populations. Most of the units developed by LIHI are occupied by formerly homeless households.
LIHI assists our residents with services that help them maintain stable housing and prevent them from becoming homeless again (e.g. through improving resident income and/or education status, dealing with long standing mental and physical health conditions) and increase self-sufficiency.
We also help homeless individuals and families remain healthy & employed: LIHI operates the Urban Rest Stop - an innovative hygiene center for the homeless located in downtown Seattle; a safe, clean and dignified place where as many as 500 homeless individuals, families, elders and youth access restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities each day. This center is open seven days a week, with extended hours specifically designed to assist homeless persons who are working or seeking employment. 60% of URS patrons have steady employment, but can't earn enough income to afford the rent.
