WE HAVE AN URGENT NEED FOR COMMITTED VOLUNTEERS. Many of our kids are about to be relocated because the motel that they are living in will be torn down. The city is attempting to relocate over 100 kids and their families. It is a stressful time for these kids as school is starting. It will be very important for them to have a strong adult in their lives who can provide them with a sense of stability as well as keeping them focused on their education while they are in transition. If you can dedicate 2-3 hours once a week for a year, please consider volunteering to tutor/mentor one of our kids.
We currently have several children who are waiting for volunteer tutors. Please contact us today! No experience in tutoring required. Volunteers have a variety of backgrounds, and we do provide training.
Youth LIFT is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with a mission to help homeless children succeed through education. We help homeless kids stay in school and complete their education by providing tutoring/mentoring services, help with school supplies and school fees, transportation coordination, school enrollment help, and other school related needs. For our volunteers, we offer meet and greet types of get togethers to network with other volunteers and have fun! We also provide activities for volunteers to bring the child they tutor on group social events where all of the matched tutors/kids are invited.
Homeless youth experience many obstacles to receiving an education, and without this extra help, they often drop out of school and continue on in a life of poverty and homelessness. These kids are more likely than their other classmates to perform below grade level, repeat grades, and drop out of school. They also have difficulty getting to school because of transportation issues and enrollment problems. As a tutor with Youth LIFT, you can help them with their educational needs so that they can do better in school and go on to graduate from high school.
We help kids in elementary, middle, and high school with all types of study needs. Tutors are matched with one homeless child for a one-on-one relationship. They meet together once each week for 2 to 3 hours each week at a schedule that is convenient to both them and the child for ONE YEAR. You will need to pick up the child from the location where they live in St Petersburg to take them somewhere to study. Tutoring one of the children in our program does require a commitment for a period of ONE YEAR. This is an essential requirement for tutoring. If you cannot meet this commitment, there are other opportunities to help (just ask how!) For more information, email us to find out about our next Orientation and Training. If you are looking to really make a difference in the life of someone less fortunate, this is the opportunity for you! Must be at least 20 years old to tutor.
