Youth LIFT is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization started in 2009 who's mission is to help homeless children succeed through education.
Homeless youth experience many obstacles to receiving an education, and without this extra help, they often drop out of school and continue on in a life of poverty and homelessness. These kids are more likely than their other classmates to perform below grade level, repeat grades, and drop out of school. They also have difficulty getting to school because of transportation issues and enrollment problems. We help homeless kids stay in school and complete their education by providing tutoring/mentoring services, help with school supplies and school fees, school enrollment help, and other school related needs. Most importantly, we want to teach these children to be tenacious through any obstacle. Beyond learning school curriculum and improving grades, we want these children to learn how to overcome, to stay positive, and to excel in life in general.
We are currently in the process of restructuring our organization into a new model that will hopefully better serve the children in our community. We are looking for three unique individuals to help us move forward with these new plans (more positions will be available in the future). These are unpaid volunteer positions with an expected commitment of at least one year and at least 15 hours per month.
- Executive Director
We are looking for someone who is able to lead a team of volunteers and to grow Youth LIFT in connection with the board of directors and program volunteers. We are looking for a flexible individual who has interest in reimagining how nonprofits are focused and organized. The board of directors is comprised of three PhD doctors experienced in the nonprofit field. We are redesigning Youth LIFT with new thoughts on how nonprofit organizations are typically run. The right person for this position will be open to exploring new ways of thinking as well as bringing their own new ideas to the team.
- Volunteer Director
The core of Youth LIFT’s principles will focus on the volunteer experience. We are looking for someone who is outgoing and energetic with a desire to make sure our volunteers are having a positive and happy experience with our organization. The experience of the volunteer should be one of connecting to a greater good and to the team around them. We want to provide a positive atmosphere to allow individuals to connect to one another and to build an organization that will thrive at helping the children within our community. The role of the Volunteer Director will be to ensure the volunteers are equipped with the resources they need to best help the children in our program. This means interviewing, training, and overseeing the volunteer roles of each Youth LIFT volunteer.
- Enrollment Director
The Enrollment Director will be responsible for enrolling children into Youth LIFT. This position requires going to the locations of the families/children and interviewing them for acceptance into the program. Additionally, this individual will be responsible for identifying the needs of the child through the interview process to help determine the best volunteer for the child to be matched with. The best candidate for this position will have the ability to communicate with homeless families and especially children, be understanding without judgment, observant of their surroundings and the needs of the family and children, and generally compassionate.
For each of these positions, we are looking for a strong dedication to a team mentality. Individual recognition will take a backseat to the overall growth and success of the mission of the organization. We are looking for candidates who are positive and outgoing with a genuine desire to help children and the community. The best qualities will be passion for both our mission as well as for building a positive Youth LIFT team. Candidates should be self-motivated, reliable, and responsible with a desire to continue learning and growing.
Hours will vary and are flexible to your schedule. However, expect at least 15 hours a month for these positions. Directors will be expected to attend team meetings, complete paperwork, and provide updates on all work. Because of the seniority of these roles, we expect at least a one year commitment for these positions. If there are multiple qualified candidates for the Volunteer Director and Enrollment Director positions, we will accept more than one volunteer for these roles. We do not currently have an office, and traditionally we have not in the past; therefore, much of your work can be done remotely depending on the position.
If you have further questions, please feel free to ask. You can email board president Dr. Shea Standefer at SheaS@youthlift.org. To apply for any one of these positions, please send resume and cover letter to SheaS@youthlift.org. Please include which position you are applying to.

Mission Statement
helping homeless youth succeed through education
Description
The purpose of Youth LIFT is to help homeless teens succeed academically, graduate from high school, and work toward a rewarding career. We do this by providing tutoring and mentoring opportunities to homeless teens. We also provide educational trips to help homeless youth learn about career opportunities that may interest them and the educational requirements of those careers. Youth LIFT attempts to inspire homeless youth to stay in school and graduate from high school to give them the resources to move to a life off the streets.
Homeless children are likely to continue a pattern of homelessness. Without education, homeless youth are bound for low-paying jobs, poverty, and further instability in their adult lives. Access to a proper education is an important step to ensuring the future success of these youth.
Homeless youth face many barriers to academic achievement including transportation issues, health problems, inadequate study conditions, constant mobility, and developmental delays. Youth LIFT works to help homeless teens overcome these barriers to succeed in school.
