POSITION TITLE: Outreach Intern

OVERVIEW:

The African People's Education and Defense Fund (www.apedf.org) needs your skills and talents to coordinate the outreach teams in one of its dynamic institutions - Uhuru Furniture and Collectibles, in Philadelphia, PA. Be part of the team making lasting changes to impact on the health, education, human rights and future of the African community. Uhuru Furniture & Collectibles is an eco-friendly, used furniture and collectibles store, selling good quality items at reasonable prices and is an important economic development institution of APEDF. If you are passionate about social justice, are a people person and want to gain outreach & marketing skills, this is a great match for you.

Under the direct supervision of the Outeach Coordinator, you will lead teams of volunteers going out to poster, door hang and hand out leaflets. This promotes Uhuru Furniture, resulting in donations, shoppers and volunteers. As the outreach intern you will be in direct contact with the volunteers on outreach shifts. You have the special responsibility of winning volunteers to a deeper understanding of the mission and programs of APEDF.

TASKS:

Organize a monthly calendar of outreach opportunities -- outdoor events and tabling, postering and organized door flyering
Lead volunteers on outreach assignments -- including community events, hanging door flyers and postering
regular weekly poster routes
Assist the outreach coordinator with volunteer follow up and staffing of outreach opportunities in order to meet goals
Lead tabling at events, meet new people of all walks of life and communicate with them about African self-determination.
Assemble outreach materials and packets
Lead brief outreach trainings for new volunteers
Create and post internet ads to recruit outreach volunteers
Provide an overview about the non-profit mission and programs to the volunteers at the beginning of every shift
Attend weekly marketing meetings and give a report

QUALIFICATIONS:

A strong passion for the APEDF mission (www.apedf.org), social justice and economic development for the African community
Knowledgeable about Uhuru Movement programs and institutions.
Be organized, punctual reliable and honest
Skill in oral communications in both one-on-one and group situations
Skill in coordinating volunteers
Have reliable and consistent cell phone for communication as needed

COMMITMENT:

This is an unpaid internship with a commitment of a minimum of 6 months, 8-20 hours per week. Some weekend hours are recommended.

Description

Uhuru Furniture and Collectibles is a non-profit store that is a fundraiser for black community empowerment programs of APEDF. We receive a truck load of donated furniture and household items every day. This is a lively, popular Philadelphia store staffed mostly by volunteers. When you volunteer at Uhuru Furniture, you not only contribute to the success of the store, you become part of a larger movement for peace through social justice. People shop at Uhuru Furniture for low priced, top quality items and to support crucial programs for social justice for African people.
