Urgent need of Arab speaking Volunteers, Mentors, interns.
SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK: Arabic speaker mentor will provide support to refugee families by ensuring their basic survival skills. This position will assist with practical needs and make referrals to appropriate community resources. The Arabic mentor to families will give friendly encouragement as refugees become familiar with American and local customs, while teaching family English.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS: Assist refugee families with becoming familiar with the local community, including transportation systems, grocery stores and restaurants, and recreational areas. Assist refugee families with managing household affairs and errands. Assist refugee families with any special needs, making sure to coordinate when needed with IRC staff. Practice and teach English and language skills and other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRMENTS: Having a car. Wiling to transport refugees. specific and recurring days of availability with no changes to be expected. Fluency in Arabic and English. Able to make appoitments for clients and take clients to those appointments. Much driving is required as we serve refugees in Miami Dade and Broward county.
Willing to learn about IRC history, philosophy, global work, and local efforts. Willing to learn about cross-cultural communication and ethnic backgrounds of clients. Willing to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies. Willingness to learn about the family and interact on a regular basis. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English and Arabic;

Description
Since 1960, the Miami resettlement office has resettled more than 10,000refugees, providing them a fresh start and opportunities to use their greatest resources--their motivation, their skills and their experiences--to become independent and self-sufficient new Americans. Currently, the office resettles and/or provides assistance to over 1,000 refugees, asylees, and victims of human trafficking per year in Miami

- nutritious, affordable food
- English language classes
- help building job, computer & financial literacy skills
- education for their children
- social services and community support
- legal services toward residency & citizenship
