This is an easy project for organizations, groups or a couple of individuals. It does not require a lot of people.
You will work with Goodwill to hold a donation drive in your town. You can pick the dates and hours for the donation trailer to be open. Many communities hold the donation drive in conjunction with their city-wide garage sale days or a special local event. Typically the trailer is open a couple of hours on Friday night, several hours on Saturday and a few on Sunday. However, that is up to you and your group. We do ask that the trailer be open at least 8 hours while it is in town.
We will usually bring a semi-trailer and leave it over a Friday, Saturday and Sunday for a donation drive. Hopefully, you can help us find a spot where we can park the trailer for that time. If not we will work to find one.
Next we need volunteers, individuals or groups, willing to oversee the donation trailer while it is in town. This will mean opening and closing the trailer and handing out donation receipts while the trailer is open and accepting donations. It does not mean you have to handle all the donations. There will be a ramp or stairs for the donors to take the items up into the truck.
You will be helping to provide a great service to your community by offering a convenient and easy way for local families and businesses to donate items. You will also be helping the environment. Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa recycles over 22 million pounds annually. So, even if Goodwill can't use the items in our stores we can keep most of them out of the local landfills through our recycling programs.
The donations collected will help change lives by supporting Goodwill programs that provide training and education to individuals with barriers.
