Families Forward Philadelphia's Tutoring Club addresses the growing academic needs of the homeless youth whose families are served in the Family Residence. Research, as well as the organization’s own hands-on experience has shown that homelessness has a devastating impact on a child’s educational opportunities as they move from school to school, have traditionally poor attendance and are subsequently far behind their peers developmentally and academically.
The curriculum and design of the Homework Club specifically addresses the education gap of homeless children. The club id staffed by two Teachers of the Philadelphia School District and volunteers arrive daily to assist with academic instruction, socialization skills development, life skills training, and structured recreational activities. The Homework Club operates in our Family Residence Monday-Friday from 3:30pm - 6pm and enables students to focus on homework assignments, engage in language, reading, math, and life skills enrichment, and enjoy structured recreational activities.
Children can benefit from one-on-one instruction time and furthermore, our teachers have an extremely effective system for dealing with behavior issues within the club that focuses on getting to the root cause for any issues and how to prevent future occurrences. There is a significant need for an on-site tutoring club which caters to the special needs of the homeless children.
Come share your reading and math skills and help end the cycle of homelessness!
