Purpose:

To provide visitors with information that will enrich their visit to the State Capitol (SC) and to Mississippi. Under the purview of the Mississippi Department or Archives and History (MDAH), the hospitality attendant will offer site-specific (SC) information, as well as tourism-related information that will make the visitor experience to Mississippi more enjoyable.

Volunteers will greet and sign in visitors, provide information about the SC and the surrounding area, give brief overview of the SC, explain guidelines, and be available for questions.

Mission Statement

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History was founded in 1902. It is the second-oldest state department of archives and history in the country. A comprehensive historical agency, the department collects, preserves, and provides access to the archival resources of the state, administers museums and historic sites, and oversees statewide programs for historic preservation, government records management, and publications.

Description

The department comprises five divisions--Administration, Archives and Records Services, Historic Preservation, Historic Properties, and Museum. The department is headquartered in the state-of-the-art William F. Winter Archives and History Building, located at North and Amite Streets in downtown Jackson. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
