The Culmore Teen Center, located in the Bailey's Crossroads area of Falls Church, is a recreation-based facility for high risk 7th through 12th graders. These teens are growing up in an incredibly diverse, lower socio-economic community. They are much more likely than their peers to join gangs, get into substance abuse, and display violent behavior. They are also more likely to drop out of school.

The Teen Center helps youth stay in school and away from gangs, drugs and violent behavior, while helping teens build positive friendships and develop important life skills.

Volunteers at the Teen Center initiate conversations and activities with youth, play games and sports, spend time with them while they work on the computers, and help prepare dinner. Develop a mentoring-type relationship with teens.

In order to have a good experience, it is critical that volunteers be self-starters who are outgoing and feel very comfortable taking initiative. It is also important to be persistent engaging with the youth--volunteers are really there to build mentoring-type relationships with the youth.

Opportunities are available Monday through Friday afternoons and evenings. The best times to volunteer are between 4 and 7 pm. Volunteers must commit to one shift each week for 6 months or longer. Training is provided and background checks are required.

Our current availability is:

Monday-Thursday- 2:30pm-9pm

Friday- 2:30-6pm

*During summer break, this program will open at 1pm.

Additionally, it is mandatory that those interested in a longer-term volunteer opportunity attend an Open Door Information Session. Our Sessions are held every second Tuesday of the month, at 10am, 3pm and 6pm for no longer than one hour. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about our programs, tour the Emergency Shelter for Teens, and ask any questions you may have regarding volunteering at the end of the Session. Please RSVP for the Open Door Information Session if you would like to attend, as space is limited. Our Open Door Information Sessions are held at our Emergency Shelter for Teens located near Tysons Corner shopping mall. Our address is:
2100 Gallows Rd.
Vienna, VA 22182

I would also recommend checking out our different programs as listed on our web site, www.thealternativehouse.org.

The best way to start the volunteer application process is to go to our website, www.TheAlternativeHouse.org and click on the "Volunteer" link. You can check out all of our volunteer opportunities and fill out and submit an application through our web site.
