The Family Learning Institute (FLI) provides free, individualized, one-to-one tutoring.
Priority is given to low-income and academically struggling students.
The students are in grades 2nd-5th and live in Washtenaw County.
FlI volunteer tutors work with students once a week, for at least a one hour session, weekdays between 4:30-7:30pm. Tutoring takes place both at selected Ann Arbor elementary schools and at the FLI main office, The Doris Sperling Learning Center - 1954 S. Industrial Hwy Suite D. Ann Arbor, MI 48104.
School year tutoring happens from October 1 - June 1 - Monday through Thursday.
Tutors are also needed at Parkridge Community Center and other Ypsilanti locations.
Absolutely no tutoring or teaching experience is necessary
-- all materials, training, and support are provided by FLI.
So, if you are able to tutor consistently and if you want to help a young student be a better reader,
FLI would love to hear from you!
FLI programs are free for all of our students thanks to dedicated volunteers like you!
We look forward to having you join our FLI community!

Mission Statement
The Family Learning Institute seeks to close the achievement gap in Washtenaw County. We believe that all students, regardless of life circumstance, deserve the chance to forge the skills they need to build the lives they dream.
Description
The Family Learning Institute (FLI) is a non-profit, volunteer-based educational organization that helps young people improve their reading, writing, math, and thinking skills. FLI works exclusively with low-income, academically underperforming 2nd-5th graders in Washtenaw county. Students are paired with one adult volunteer tutor for the entire school year, developing an educational and mentorship relationship; our professional teaching staff (Elementary Reading and Math Specialists) provide all the training and materials necessary to target our students' specific areas for growth. Each student in our program attends a two-hour session, once a week, half of which is spent working one-on-one with their tutor and the other half of which is spent working on writing or math application skills in small groups.
