Be with a hospice patient during the time he/she is actively dying.
The goal of the bedside volunteer is to be a presence to our patients, to be a support, not to make anything significant happen, nor know all the answers. Bedside volunteers will sit with hospice patient when they begin to show signs and symptoms of approaching death. During this time bedside volunteers may sit alone with the patient, hold his or her hand, read, play music for, be a support to family members/friends who need to take time away, have not made it to the home of the patient yet, or be there for a patient who does not have family or friends. It's also a way to show support to facility staff, if the patient is in the nursing home, in order to free up the care they provide to many other patients.
Additional training regarding the signs and symptoms of approaching death, goals and the role of this program provided.
Be a part of the team providing support, care, respite or a presence during this time. Volunteers utilized in an as needed basis
