ESL classroom at El Buen Samaritano
Our adult ESL classes bring together a diverse classroom of students who are all motivated to learn English and create better opportunities for themselves and their families. All classes are taught by volunteers who learn skills in teaching, motivation and presentation. Since 2011, volunteers who taught with El Buen used their volunteer experience to gain jobs teaching English abroad in Poland, Argentina, South Korea, China and Spain.

At El Buen Samaritano, our volunteers can make a lasting difference in the lives of Austin families by volunteering to teach ESL classes for a semester. Anyone with native or near native fluency in English who is motivated to help others can apply to teach. By committing a few hours a week, you can strengthen our community and share the tools of the English language to a classroom of motivated adult learners.

Volunteers will support weekly virtual English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for our adult students this June and July.

Activities: Each week, volunteers will follow fully built lesson plans and help adult students practice their English Language with El Buen staff support!

Location: 100% Virtual via Zoom!

Qualifications: A desire to help our community, open to other cultures and a sense of fun! Teaching experience is a bonus but not required.

Available Class Times: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am - 11:00 am or 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Minimum Commitment: 1 day a week for either the morning or evening class shift.

Classes start June 8th and end July 29th, 2021.

About El Buen Samaritano Episcopal Mission

Location:

7000 Woodhue Dr., Austin, TX 78745, US

Mission Statement

El Buen Samaritano, an outreach ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas serving the Latino community of Central Texas, is committed to recognizing the dignity of all by ensuring access to healthcare, education and essential needs that lead to healthy, productive and secure lives.

Description

Since its inception, El Buen has been at the forefront of responding to the many social-environmental factors leading to lack of access to health care, social services, education, and nutrition. Over time, El Buen has adapted to meet the community needs that come with population growth, immigration, and economic fluctuations.

This adaptation to change has led to our comprehensive strategy of becoming a "one stop shop" to address the needs of the Latino and Spanish-speaking community in Travis County and surrounding areas. Through our Family and Health Literacy programming, El Buen provides education (ESL, Digital Literacy, Adult Basic Education and High School Equivalency in Spanish), workforce development, child and adolescent development (parenting and school-readiness, after school tutoring, and summer camp), health literacy (access to health services, chronic disease management classes and screenings), a year-round, no-cost food pantry, and a community garden where clients can grow their own healthy food. These services are provided by bilingual bicultural staff that includes community health workers (CHWs), volunteers, and health and social services practitioners
