A little background - Family House is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization providing temporary housing to families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at the University of California San Francisco Benioff Children's Hospital. Qualifying families live more than 50 miles from UCSF, and many live at or below the low-income status as determined by UCSF. Our location sustains nearly a 100% occupancy rate and can accommodate 240 people per night. Over the course of a year we serve more than 4,000 families. Since we receive no financial support from UCSF, or any other public entity, Family House relies solely on the generous contributions of individuals, foundations and corporations. Attached please find a postcard describing Family House and the services we provide. Family House opened a brand new facility built from the ground up in May 2016 in Mission Bay. Nancy and Stephen Grand Family House will include 80 bedrooms, a family atmosphere, communal kitchens, living rooms, teen room, exercise room, family parking, and a private 3,200 square foot outdoor courtyard. The new building more than doubles the organization’s capacity at its two former locations on Irving Street and 10th Avenue in San Francisco’s Inner Sunset neighborhood. Now more than ever we will be needing help from our community partners to sustain our operations and helping so many more family each year.
Family House has a number of potential opportunities to get your group involved in volunteering (depending on your needs and the number of staff you're expecting will want to get involved). Here are a few:
- Family Dinners: Host a Family Dinner: scheduled on a weekday night (Monday-Thursday from 4:30pm-7:30pm) where volunteers (8-10 volunteers) can financial fund and assist in providing a meal for the families in our ovens to then be ready to serve. This is a great way to get to know a lot of families and can strengthen the Family House community.
- Family Breakfast: Host a Family Breakfast: scheduled on a weekday morning (Monday-Friday from 8am-10:30am) where volunteers (10-12 volunteers) can come host a continental breakfast.
- Hosted Events at Family House: There are also opportunities to schedule events at Family House for the families. They have had success in companies, like Genentech for example, hosting an outdoor BBQ for the families. The company paid for the caterer, volunteered in serving the families and also organized and ran activities for the kids. We have opportunities to host our Cinco-De-Mayo party, Easter celebration, Halloween and other fun holiday events.
