Are you looking to make a positive impact for both your community and yourself?

Come volunteer with one of the most dynamic museums in the City and bring fun, meaningful, creative experiences to diverse audiences of all ages!

MCD volunteers engage with the public both inside and outside the museum by facilitating hands-on projects and dialogue around contemporary craft and design. Volunteer experiences most often take place in public programs and education. Community and museum programs provide opportunities to learn cutting-edge design skills, gain experience as an arts instructor, explore unexpected materials, meet local arts practitioners and enthusiasts and enjoy firsthand access to artists, authors and arts professionals.

Since 2004, the Museum of Craft and Design has launched exhibitions and initiatives that explore the materials, theory, and social function of modern and contemporary craft and design. MCD maintains innovative programming in varied neighborhoods of San Francisco as well as a popular slate of in-house events. MCD encourages audiences to see the world and their capabilities differently, and volunteers are key points of contact for these public interactions.

MCD volunteers also have the opportunity to train as museum docents, attend curator walkthroughs, gain behind-the-scenes museum experience, and to accrue benefits such as discounts in our award-winning store, access to other museums, and museum membership.

To learn more and sign up for upcoming events, please email our volunteer coordinator: rshipps@sfmcd.org or volunteer@sfmcd.org.

Mission Statement

Through inspired exhibitions and experiential programs, MCD explores the creative process and current perspectives in craft and design.

Description

Vision:

The Museum of Craft and Design (MCD) makes creativity accessible to everyone.

MCD’s exhibitions and programs:

- Illuminate the creative process
- Question the conventional notion of art
- Inspire awe and spark curiosity
- Invite participation and collaboration
- Champion designers, makers, artists and risk-takers

MCD is the only San Francisco museum devoted exclusively to craft and design. Exhibitions present innovative craft and design in varied media, with interpretation and programs focusing on process and hands-on experiences. Since the museum's founding in 2004, MCD has dynamically brought arts programming outside of the museum walls and into community settings, engaging public events and spaces with a range of ideas, materials and processes.
