A child from a middle-income family typically enters first grade with about 1,000 hours of one-on-one picture book reading time with parents, other family members, or teachers, compared with a child from a low-income family who averages less than 100 hours. ECARE is seeking Reading Pal volunteers interested in working individually with a four year old pre-kindergarten student at one of the following locations: Global Learning Academy, Gibson Head Start Center, Weis Elementary School, Montclair Elementary School and McMillan Pre-K Center. The goal of this program is to help students build strong pre-literacy skills that are necessary for kindergarten success. A commitment of one hour, one day per week for the school year is requested. Volunteers are trained to effectively use themed literacy kits that engage children in age appropriate learning activities. Mentor training and on-going support are provided to ensure a positive volunteer experience. A successful background check including references and a Level II security screening is required of all volunteers. Volunteers must be able to work independently with children. Volunteers must be smoke/ tobacco/ nicotine free.
Please include your contact number so we can reach you by phone.
