APA! depends on the generosity of our community, and we hope to provide engaging, meaningful volunteer activities for community groups and members.

As a non-profit, we receive no funding from government agencies, but rely on individual donations to cover our operational expenses and lifesaving care. Because saving lives is our first priority, we aren’t able to dedicate the resources to match the demand for one-time volunteering or educational activities.

We hope that one of the below options will accommodate your needs.

*Due to safety concerns for our visitors, staff, volunteers, and our animals, we have age restrictions and size limitations for groups. Groups will also not be able to handle any animals. See below for more information.

Group Volunteering

Our group volunteer activities are limited to ages 18 years or older and we have 2 options available:

  1. Click for Quiet - Groups of up to 15 individuals can assist our Dog Enrichment team at our Town Lake Animal Center location. Our Dog Enrichment Program is integral to APA!’s success in saving large breed dogs. Please click HERE to learn more and how to schedule your group. All activities are outside and completed year round in all weather conditions.
  2. Tuck-In Time - Groups of 5-10 individuals can assist with getting our dogs at our Town Lake Animal Center location "tucked-in" for the evening. Volunteers will remove food bowls, pass out blankets as needed, and refill waters. If you have a larger group, you can schedule multiple days or times within the same day or week. All activities are outside and completed year round in all weather conditions. This option will typically be available on week nights from 6pm-8pm.
We ask that groups support APA! by donating much needed supplies. These items include: peanut butter, dog treats, trash bags, bleach, hand sanitizer, liquid laundry detergent, dish soap and paper towels. You can view our full wish list on Amazon (Please sort by priority) and have the items shipped directly to APA!.

Volunteer Groups fill up FAST and operate on a first come, first served basis. We do our best to accommodate every group, but due to staff and volunteer bandwidth, sometimes that's just not possible. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility. As always, we are happy help you run your own supply or donation drive to support APA!

About Austin Pets Alive!

Location:

Town Lake Animal Center, 1156 W. Cesar Chavez St., Austin, TX 78703, US

Mission Statement

To keep Austin a no-kill city by serving as the safety net to the city shelter's animals that would otherwise be killed, saving the most medically and behaviorally challenged pets.

Description

Please visit our website listed if interested in volunteering!

Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) is a 501(c) 3 (nonprofit) organization run almost exclusively by dedicated volunteers.

We are implementing innovative and progressive programs in Austin and Central Texas after studying the best practices of other cities who are no-kill or are in the process of becoming no-kill.

We have created our own "road map" that uses a lot of experience from many different places as well as incorporating the unique characteristics of the Austin area. Austin is rich in prevention resources such as spay/neuter, compared to other cities, and we are filling the gaps in service areas that have been historically under-represented, such as high volume, high quality adoption.

We are currently focused on helping the healthy and treatable pets who are at risk of being killed in a shelter, by rescuing the pets who are at the greatest risk and helping owners who are having problems so great that they need to surrender their pet(s) to a shelter.

In our rescue program, to not duplicate work of other agencies, we focus solely on the pets who have already been passed over by other groups and the shelters’ adoption programs and only take the healthy and treatable pets who are about to be killed and have no other options.
