Are you interested in learning how to prepare taxes while making a difference in your community? Become a VITA Volunteer with Goodwill SCWI! Last year we helped file taxes for 516 of our neighbors and this year we’d like to help even more. VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) is a partnership program with the IRS to provide free tax services for low-to-moderate individuals and families. Training is offered both online and in-person. Interested in participating? They are a variety of ways you can help make sure our community members receive their maximum tax returns at no cost.
- Schedulers: help answer calls, return emails, and ensure that each person is scheduled and ready for their upcoming appointment.
- Greeters: help welcome those who are using our services. Make sure folks are checked in for their appointments and ready for the next steps.
- Intake: gather the information needed for the tax preparers, make copies, organize important materials, and ensure the tax preparers have what they need to begin!
- Basic Tax Preparers: prepare taxes for our neighbors that are less complex. Meet with individuals and families, review documents, and utilize our software to prepare taxes for those in our community.
- Advanced Tax Preparers: for those who would like to assist others in more complex tax preparation. Partner with our community members to ensure they receive their maximum returns! We are most in need of Advanced Tax Preparers. We work with small business owners, students, and a variety of unique situations. We have an existing group of experienced and knowledgeable volunteers ready to assist and share.
- Quality Reviewers: these are the individuals who review taxes after the taxes have been prepared by other volunteers. A checklist is followed and we carefully ensure we’ve completed each step for that person. We review all of our tax returns and this position is available to Basic and Advanced Tax Preparers based on the complexity of the tax return.

Goodwill of South Central Wisconsin is a local nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization employing more than 450 team members in a 14-county region. 13 retail stores and one attended donation center help fund Goodwill’s mission services in South Central Wisconsin, which include supported employment and job skills training for community members with barriers to employment, along with supportive housing for individuals living with chronic mental illness and volunteer income tax assistance.
