As a volunteer, you will provide opportunities for a struggling young students to practice reading as well as gain self-confidence. The volunteers, or coaches, practice individually with the same first-third grade student once a week for 35 minutes for an academic year; in a simple format that emphasizes reading, writing, and building basic skills. As a result, volunteers are able to make serious, meaningful connections with struggling readers and help move them toward reading proficiency. One to One reading coaches are given comprehensive training to understand how a child learns to read and specific strategies to engage them in reading.
Opportunities exist at 42 elementary schools in Northern Kentucky. Flexible scheduling allows coaches to work with teachers to mutually agree on the coaching session time. Training begins in August.
