HIV/AIDS Education and Orphanage Project

Equine Therapy for Disabled Children in Cape Town

Volunteer abroad on our specialized project and help to provide equine therapy to disabled children in South Africa. This incredibly unique and highly sought after project, works to aid children with very little mobility by giving them the chance to experience freedom in their limbs through horseback riding. With the assistance of volunteers and trained instructors, disabled children can have access to free therapy sessions, helping them to develop their motor skills while increasing their confidence and strength.

Computer Literacy and Arts Volunteering

Volunteer in South Africa and work with rural communities on the outskirts of Chintsa, on the East cape’s beautiful Wild Coast. Since 2004, this project has focused on bringing computer literacy to the children of the poorest communities in the area. Through fundraising, grants, sponsorship by Microsoft, and volunteer support, we are now working with 6 schools, managing 4 computer labs with 150 computers teaching over 1000 learners from pre-school to high school. The project has equipped schools with networked labs, developed teaching aids and support structures for teachers and pupils, and has helped to teach basic computer skills in the classroom environment. Additionally, a new initiative launched in 2010 sees an ex-army land-rover adapted into a mobile computer lab to allowing the project to reach even further with their work.

HIV/AIDS Education and Day Care Volunteering

By volunteering in South Africa on our orphanage project, you'll be based in the area of St. Lucia, which, unfortunately, is heavily affected by HIV/AIDS. It is believed that in some communities, up to 70 percent of the population are infected with the virus. As a result, many children are orphaned. Most of these children live with their relatives, but they are often left by themselves during the day, as their caretakers are at work. To keep these children off the streets, and to make sure they are well looked after and educated, Day Care Centres and creches provide a valuable service . We are working alongside these orphanages and day care centres as well as contributing to the HIV awareness and education initiatives of the town.

Community Teaching Volunteering in Cape Town

Assist with early years education and homework clubs in South Africa by joining us for community teaching volunteering in Cape Town. You will assist with providing essential teaching support in the poverty stricken communities in the townships of Cape Town. Through education the project aims to promote, support and provide Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) with better opportunities and futures. Pre-school preparation has been identified as being extremely important and this project helps to give children from impoverished backgrounds a head start by focusing on the basic skills. It also works with after school programmes with homework support. Where possible, the schools are looking to incorporate sports and arts into their programmes, as these are often deemed less important than academic subjects.

Family Volunteering: Care and Education for Pre-School Children in South Africa

If you’re looking for a way to make a difference, this school in South Africa’s Wild Coast aims to make education accessible to disadvantaged children in townships and is in need of volunteers to offer support to local teachers. By volunteering your time, you and your family will be contributing to positive change in South Africa and helping to create a safe environment in which these children can learn.

The school, founded in 2007 has a unique approach and designed so that parent(s) must contribute a nominal fee each month, and in return their child receives an education, is picked up on time each day, and is provided with a nutritious meal. The school fees of the children are then covered by sponsors.
As volunteers, your family will provide extraordinary opportunities for significantly disadvantaged rural children to interact with native English speakers. Upon leaving school, the ability to speak English will be extremely advantageous to children in South Africa, due it’s booming tourism industry and increasingly involvement in international business. Pre-school education and care is heavily under- resourced in South Africa and your assistance will be much appreciated.

Community Sports Coaching Volunteering in Cape Town

Join our project and help with community sports coaching volunteering in Cape Town and improve access to sports in South Africa. You will support 2 coaches who are working to provide access and better quality skills and fitness awareness to children of two townships.

In 1994 post-Apartheid, the South African government Physical Education was removed as a main activity and incorporated into life skills sessions, meaning that it only happens on rare occasions. This has led to a reduction in student involvement in physical activity. Sport is an integral part of development and helps to increase concentration and develop crucial skills such as leadership, team work, and communication. However, without intervention this would not be available to the children of the townships. Through the work of a sports charity the integration of these two coaches into primary education means that sports inclusion is possible.

Extra-curricular programs have been established which provide children with a means to get off the street and engaged in physical activity and activities tend to be run at after school programmes.. Some of the centres offer children protection from abuse and access to sport and exercise gives them an outlet for their anxieties as well as stimulating their feeling of wellbeing . Volunteer on this community sports coaching project and be a part of activities that are helping to provide basic needs and development opportunities for vulnerable and disadvantaged children.

Mission Statement

Kaya's mission is to promote sustainable social, environmental and economic development, empower communities and cultivate educated, compassionate global citizens through responsible travel.

Description

Responsible travel is about seeing the world in a manner that most respects and benefits local people, culture and the environment - it's travel in the real world, not tourism.

Every year thousands of people travel the globe looking to explore new environment and experience different cultures, with a spirit of adventure and a desire to learn more about the world.

As global travel becomes more accessible, and we look to visit further and more exotic locations, we often discover that the real world is not always easy to uncover, and often visitors don't get a chance to see beyond the window that tourism can offer.

As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to become a real part of the environments, lives and communities of the world's developing nations. And whether you chose to work on projects that benefit the wildlife, the environment or the people, you come away knowing that your being there has positively impacted those you have visited.

At Kaya, we pride ourselves on delivering only what is best for our volunteers and best for the communities which we are working with. You will find many volunteer organizations to chose between today, and many of these are also offering great placements around the world. But we believe that no-one works closer with their volunteers and with the receiving communities on the ground to make sure everyone can achieve the greatest benefits that volunteering has to offer.

For those of you who have skills that can benefit the projects, and even if you are looking to develop your professional skills in a developing country, your help is invaluable and Kaya staff will work with you to ensure your role matches your skill.

Internships, group ventures and specialist projects can be arranged by request.
