ORGANIZATION: Magee Rehabilitation Hospital

The Facility Dog Program Intern at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital will be involved in the daily operations of the program including responding to emails, organizing educational and promotional materials, and assisting with the scheduling of sessions. After completing an educational series on Canine Facilitated Therapy and Handling, the intern will be involved with transporting the Facility Dog between therapists and staff members during the work day, as well as walking the Facility Dog during lunch breaks. The intern will have the opportunity after demonstrating competency to handle the Facility Dog during patient treatment sessions.

Intern must be studying or have completed course work in a human services or health profession related field, or in statistics. Intern must have a strong desire to gain experience and knowledge with animal assisted therapy.

Specific skills and qualities needed include:

-Calm demeanor and teachable attitude

-Knowledge and ability to utilize email systems

-Must be available for training with Facility Dog

-Ability to take video and pictures of sessions with Facility Dog

-Basic data management with Excel and filing skills

Shift:10am-2pm (can be flexible with scheduled hours)

Hours per Shift: 4 hours

Shifts per Week: 2-4 days per week

Total number of volunteers: 1-2 volunteers

Location where volunteer will work: Primarily on the 4 th and 5 th floors, although job duties will take intern to multiple locations throughout the hospital

Accessibility needs: Intern must be able to independently negotiate curbs, elevators, retrieve light weight objects from ground level, transport 10lb bag.
