Respite programs offer caregivers a period of rest or relief as their loved ones meet with qualified staff in a safe, familiar environment. These centers provide a safe and stimulating environment, daytime meals, opportunities for socialization, and full-time nurses and geriatric specialists on staff. The supervisors at the Alzheimer's Care & Enrichment Program consistently report that about one-third of new adult day care clients tend to be withdrawn, exhibit difficulty adjusting to the adult day care setting, and are reluctant to participate in Center activities. It is essential that new clients adjust to the adult day care setting so that they can experience the full benefits of the Center. The Alzheimer's Care & Enrichment Program already operates at maximum capacity, so Center personnel have little time to provide one-on-one support to these clients to help them adjust to the adult day care setting. Extra attention and encouragement from volunteers can ease this adjustment and promote participation and socialization.
Volunteer must pass station supervisor interview and background checks to be accepted as a volunteer.
