Volunteers are indispensable to the work we do at LCS. We are happy to partner with community members of all abilities and talents in support of people experiencing homelessness in our shelter. Volunteers at LCS promote awareness about homelessness, organize donation drives, maintain a community garden, and help with day-to-day operations at the shelter. Volunteers are added to a scheduling app where they can view the LCS Volunteer Calendar, request shifts, and track their hours.

Mission Statement
Grounded in human rights and social justice, our mission is to advance compassionate solutions for people facing homelessness through advocacy, shelter, and housing.
Description
The Lawrence Community Shelter (LCS) is the only emergency homeless shelter serving Lawrence and Douglas County in Kansas. In 2021, LCS created a new Housing Team based on Housing First Principles to provide long-term impact in our community beyond shelter. The Housing Team includes an Inreach Manager, Housing Navigator, and Housing Stabilization Manager. When people arrive at LCS, they meet with the Inreach Manager first to get any documents they’re missing. Then they go to the Housing Navigator to find housing and get help with the application process. Finally, they work with the Housing Stabilization Manager to get resources, supports, and referrals to make sure they stay housed. When people stay housed-when they have stability-they don’t end up back at the shelter. Instead, they begin their journey to a positive future!
