Job Title(s) and Description(s): Volunteers will gain experience and knowledge of the profession by assisting mounted rangers with preparations for park patrols, programs and/or events. Activities could include: Horse husbandry, stable management and stable projects.

  • Volunteer Administrative Assistant We have filing, data entry, etc. that needs to be completed to keep the organization running. We can use your office skills in several areas. Hours will vary and can be flexible around your schedule.
  • Volunteer CoordinatorJob duties include interviewing new volunteers and matching them with a specific job. Creating schedules and working with the volunteers to ensure they understand their job. Working with staff who volunteers may be working under. Must have experience leading others and be 18 or older.
  • Volunteer Community Service Group/Individuals(Community Service/HS and College Service Hours/Company Public Service) A Roustabout works on special projects and one-time events. They may be painting, building, spraying, etc. Groups of Roustabouts come in for special projects that require many hands or can be individuals for general maintenance projects. Do you have a group that requires hours of public service for their community? We will use the skills you/your group may bring and requires.
  • Volunteer EquestrianExercise patrol horses, as assigned and as scheduled. Duties include, but not limited to tack cleaning, grooming, clipping, sheath cleaning, etc.
  • Volunteer Fundraising Assistant Mounted Unit needs volunteers with skills and knowledge in the areas of planning and coordinating fundraising efforts that will expand the donor base and generate funds needed to ensure the future of our program. This support team will work directly on fundraising and/or special event committees. Fundraising/Sponsorship, computer skills, graphic design, grants writing (environmental, equine related, law enforcement, etc. grants that our programs is seeking to obtain.)
  • Volunteer Marketing AssistantSkills or contacts in this area to ensure that communication, Public Relations and community outreach reflect our mission and goals. Areas to be addressed by these volunteers may be: Developing a PR and Communication plan annually, Contribute to the newsletter, news releases, brochures, and other outreach material, Ensure adequate education, outreach and PR to the community at large, Create information and training videos. Advertising/Marketing - Newsletter enhancement Brochure enhancement Flyers and other pamphlet enhancement Emailing follow-up for programs and events Phone call follow-up programs and events
  • Volunteer Program AssistantThe Mounted Unit offers numerous programs, such as horse demonstrations, guided trail rides, stable tours, etc. that need equine assistants
  • Volunteer Stable Aide AssistantAssist the Mounted Unit staff working in the stable with the horses. Duties include, but not limited to mucking, bedding, grooming, clipping, sheath cleaning, picking paddocks, tack cleaning, etc.
  • Volunteer Special Events Assistant Volunteers serve on event committees and or assist with various special events that the DCR Mass park ranger mounted unit is involved, such as First Day Hikes @ the Blue Hills Reservation, Maple Sugaring Events @ the Blue Hills Reservation and Breakheart Reservation, Fishing Festival @ the Blue Hills Reservation, Spring/Summer/Fall and Winter Trail Rides @ various State Parks, Spring/Fall Volunteer Park Clean-up Days at Equestrian Training Area and Broderick Stable in the Blue Hills Reservation.
  • Volunteer Special Skills Group/IndividualsVolunteers who possess skills or professional/technical experience that may benefit Park Ranger Mounted Unit and Stable as needed, such as Facility repairs & maintenance; carpentry, general contracting, Artistic work, Photography, Serving on Committees, Musical skills & Entertainment, Special Projects from individual staff members.

Schedule: Commitment must be 1 shift/month minimum. Exceptions; special project/service days/events, and equestrians, schedule will be discussed with unit supervisor.

Equine Requirements/Equestrian Commitment:

  • Equestrian - must be training level dressage or better. A consistent individualized equine exercise schedule planned with unit supervisor.
  • All positions - Volunteering in many of the positions require moderate physical activity. Please be sure you are comfortable and capable with the physical aspects of the role you select.

Note:

  • Many Volunteers assist with park programs that involve school/special from toddlers to elderly, special needs groups and the general public; CORI check required.
  • Not paid positions.

To promote, enhance and educate Volunteers about Environmental , Public Safety, Animal Husbandry.

Description

Under the general supervision of the volunteer’s Mounted Unit Lieutenant, volunteers are responsible for basic horse care, basic stable maintenance, of assigned mount. Assist at park events; assist with park programs, which may involve school/special groups from toddlers to elderly, special needs groups to general public; and/or assist with exercising of mounts (this is only offered to those who hold special equine skills that meet approval with the Lieutenant of the Mounted Unit). Some volunteers help with administrative projects (marketing, fundraising, grant writing, programming, etc.) Not a paid position.

Some training is provided. Advanced riders only.
