Environmental Conservation in the South Island

Volunteer in New Zealand and get involved in vital environmental conservation projects. This project focuses on preserving and restoring New Zealand’s unique, natural beauty. Volunteers will take part in varied activities which may include environmental monitoring; Heritage Restoration; tree planting; endangered species protection and disaster relief to name some. This project will be enjoyed by all who have a love for the outdoors, who are environmentally concerned and up for a challenge. The South Island is one of 2 locations in New Zealand that volunteers can choose to work at, the second location being the North Island. Although the start location is Christchurch, volunteers can choose to transfer direct to more rural locations around Punakaiki, where the natural environment can be truly appreciated.

Environmental Conservation in the North Island

The need for us to become responsible global citizens is getting bigger and bigger. All over the world the impact of environmental issues such as climate change and pollution are being felt. Although New Zealand is a developed country, its varied landscapes, from subtropical forest to volcanic plateaus; vast plains to glaciers and sandy beaches to rugged mountains, can prove difficult to manage with climatic instability and human impacts. The country’s fragile environment is unfortunately suffering from species and habitat loss and environmental degradation. One factor affecting this is the amount of deforestation which has taken place and the effect this is having on climate change. Being located on top of the ring of fire of the Pacific, New Zealand is also prone to experience natural disasters. From earthquakes, such as the one in Christchurch in June 2011, to volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and cyclones, the aftermath of such events can be devastating for people and the environment. People in New Zealand highly value their natural environment and although there are professionals in the field, volunteers play a huge role in responding to environmental challenges by bringing enthusiasm and energy to the toughest of projects and disaster relief efforts.

Mission Statement

Kaya's mission is to promote sustainable social, environmental and economic development, empower communities and cultivate educated, compassionate global citizens through responsible travel.

Description

Responsible travel is about seeing the world in a manner that most respects and benefits local people, culture and the environment - it's travel in the real world, not tourism.

Every year thousands of people travel the globe looking to explore new environment and experience different cultures, with a spirit of adventure and a desire to learn more about the world.

As global travel becomes more accessible, and we look to visit further and more exotic locations, we often discover that the real world is not always easy to uncover, and often visitors don't get a chance to see beyond the window that tourism can offer.

As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to become a real part of the environments, lives and communities of the world's developing nations. And whether you chose to work on projects that benefit the wildlife, the environment or the people, you come away knowing that your being there has positively impacted those you have visited.

At Kaya, we pride ourselves on delivering only what is best for our volunteers and best for the communities which we are working with. You will find many volunteer organizations to chose between today, and many of these are also offering great placements around the world. But we believe that no-one works closer with their volunteers and with the receiving communities on the ground to make sure everyone can achieve the greatest benefits that volunteering has to offer.

For those of you who have skills that can benefit the projects, and even if you are looking to develop your professional skills in a developing country, your help is invaluable and Kaya staff will work with you to ensure your role matches your skill.

Internships, group ventures and specialist projects can be arranged by request.
