About

Environmental Conservation and Community Empowerment

This volunteer project is based on the banks of the stunning Kinabatangan River; an extremely biologically diverse area where orangutans, gibbons, proboscis monkeys, langur monkeys, Borneo pygmy elephants, crocodiles and a whole host of wild and wonderful bird species live. This project is a unique initiative that is run for the community by the community. It was set up to protect the forest habitat, wildlife and biodiversity of the local area while preserving the livelihood of the local population. Volunteers get involved with conservation and community work during their stay meaning that everyone who lives in the area benefits from the work being done, from the orangutans to their slightly less hairy cousins - humans!

Family Volunteering: Community Empowerment in Borneo

This community empowerment project in Borneo is perfect for a nature loving family. This project is based on the banks of the stunning Kinbatangan River, with orangutans, gibbons, proboscis and langur monkeys, Borneo pygmy elephants, crocodiles and a whole host of wild and wonderful bird species as your neighbours, it will be your dream location. The project is run for the community by the community and was set up to protect the forest, wildlife and biodiversity of the local area while preserving the livelihood of the local population.

The forests that surround the river, were devastated by wide-spreading forest fires in both 1983 and 1998, causing natural regeneration to come to a halt. This has subsequently affected the 10 primate species native to the area that found their habitat there. With such a large area affected, volunteer help is very much needed for regeneration. Not only the forest but the river was also adversely affected, with the fish population diminished by the noxious water weed, Salvinia Molesta, which, if left unchecked, choke critical wetland habitats, turning pristine lakes into sludge. As volunteers, your family will be providing much needed extra manpower to the conservation of this important habitat the eco-camp that provides a much needed income to the local community through eco-tourism.

Island Coral Reef Conservation and Turtle Nesting

Volunteer with Kaya and work on a two-pronged approach to marine conservation. While the main focus of this project is to renovate the coral reefs that have been badly damaged due to 45 years of fish bombing, you will also be working to help protect the endangered Green and Hawksbill Turtles who come to Pom Pom Island from May to September to nest. The ultimate goal of the project is to rebuild fish and coral populations so that the occasional reef sharks are encouraged to stay and remain resident within this sanctuary for sharks, rays, turtles and all marine life.
