Open Heart Magic
Bring joy and magic to sick kids

Open Heart Magic (OHM) is a nonprofit organization that delivers strength, hope, joy, and magic to sick kids in hospitals. As a volunteer Hospital Magician, you’ll bring laughter and wonder to kids who need it most...vulnerable kids facing medical setbacks, scary treatments, or tough hospital stays. OHM is currently recruiting top-notch folks to join this amazing community of volunteers to help sick kids get their magic back.

Quite possibly, the best place to volunteer in Chicago (and beyond!)

Hospital Magicians tell us that their visits are the best part of their week - they leave energized and inspired. As a Hospital Magician, not only will you perform magic one-on-one at kids’ bedsides, you’ll also empower them by teaching them a magic trick.

No Magic Background Necessary - Learn Everything at Magic University

You don’t need to know magic to be a Hospital Magician. OHM teaches it all in Magic University, a 12-week course with a blend of in-person sessions, online meetings, video, and solo practice. Our experienced Magic University Trainers teach professional level magic, at no cost to volunteers.

Times of Service/Hospital Location For This Listing

With the Bedside Magic program returning to Central DuPage Hospital in a phased approach, we are currently recruiting with limited spots for service. The schedule will continue to grow as we reach new phases with the hospital, with the end goal of the schedule being Tuesday afternoons. Hospital Magicians commit to visiting kids once every other week on a set day and time, with each visit lasting approximately 2 hours.

Magic University Location and Training Schedule

Magic University is typically held twice a year with applications open year-round. We are recruiting for our fall session, which will tentatively begin in September 2021, if safe to do so. Training sessions last two-hours and are held weekly on Mondays at 6:00 PM. The in-person Magic U sessions will be held in the Loop, easily accessible by public transportation.

  • A reliable schedule for service
  • Dedicated, high energy, fun, outgoing individuals with a sense of humor
  • Interest in learning magic, and commitment to master this art
  • Sensitivity and social skills to work with kids and families
  • Any performance experience is highly regarded
  • Previous experience in volunteering is highly regarded

Your commitment to learning the magic, mastering the protocol, and being present at all scheduled service times is paramount to being a Hospital Magician.

These kids will be depending on you to come and do magic. A commitment of at least one year of service is required - due to the extensive training investment provided by OHM. You will need to consistently provide service every other week as part of the program.

Due to the sensitive nature of the service Open Heart Magic provides and hospital requirements, applicants must be at least 21 years of age.

Thanks for checking out the opportunity to help kids. Our next Magic University is scheduled for Fall, typically we do a full application review about 2-3 months to begin reaching out to candidates. We're looking forward to speaking with you!
