From one of our SNAP Volunteers

Just Harvest helps over 100 households apply for food stamps every month. You can help walk clients through this sometimes complicated process by making follow-up phone calls, ensuring that their documents are properly forwarded, and maintaining accurate records.

Strong phone and computer skills are required, as well as an empathetic attitude towards financially struggling households. A minimum commitment of 3 hours every week is strongly encouraged.

We're currently looking for volunteers for daytime hours Monday and Friday.

About Just Harvest

Location:

317 East Carson Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15219, US

Mission Statement

Just Harvest works to promote a just system of food access by addressing the root causes of hunger - systemic poverty and inequity - through policy advocacy, grassroots organizing, community-based solutions, and connecting people to benefits.

Description

Our Program Areas:
ADVOCATING FOR CHANGE: We advocate for policies at the federal, state, county, and local level that alleviate hunger and poverty in our region. Issues that we work on include: Protecting nutrition programs such as SNAP, fair tax policies, and addressing food deserts.

CONNECTING PEOPLE TO BENEFITS

SNAP Makes a Difference: SNAP is the critical anti-hunger and anti-poverty safety net benefit, helping 1.8 million Pennsylvanians and 47 million nationwide. For 7 years, Just Harvest has provided assistance to help thousands of low-income households apply for benefits.

Case Advocacy: We advocate for the fair treatment of clients as they navigate safety-net bureaucracies. Whether it is a food stamp participant who has been denied benefits unfairly, or a mother on welfare seeking a work exemption because of illness, we are here to help clients get what they need.

Fresh Access: The Fresh Access program fights hunger by improving access to nutritious food at farmers markets across the Pittsburgh area.

Free Tax Prep Coalition: As a lead partner in the United Way of Allegheny County’s Free Tax PrepCoalition - Just Harvest provides free, IRS-certified income tax preparation for low-income tax clients at four Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Sites in Allegheny County.
