After school and weeknights in the homey spaces of the 3-flat building on Marshfield Avenue, tutor/mentors work one-on-one with school age children. Staff create weekly lessons for the tutor to use with the student that are tailored to the student's learning style. Tutoring sessions occur once or twice a week and combine a variety of educational activities such as reading books together, writing stories, and playing educational games.

Mission Statement
Family Matters is a family-centered organization in the North-of-Howard neighborhood that seeks to be a catalyst for change -- building and strengthening the community through programs that support personal growth and leadership.
Description
The Community Tutoring Program at Family Matters provides one-on-one volunteer tutoring to school-age children and youth. We believe that tutoring is especially beneficial when a young person works with a tutor who is able to respond to his/her particular needs, experiences, and knowledge. The staff supports tutors with training and individualized lesson plans for each session. Tutoring sessions occur on weekday afternoons and evenings. Since tutoring is most effective when it occurs in an environment of continuity and trust, each tutor commits to coming faithfully at least one evening per week to work with the same student for at least one school year.
