Library for the Blind

Volunteers are always needed to label digital audio book cartridges and containers and help with processing of new Braille books. They may be asked to assist with removing digital audio books from the collection and packaging them for shipment to the National Library Service for the Blind's authorized excess facility. They may also be asked to help shift the collection on the shelves to allow for more space for new books. The library is open Monday- Friday 8am-4:30pm.

Mission Statement

The Library for the Blind is the public library for anyone who cannot use regular print material.

Description

The Arkansas State Library’s Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped is part of the National Library Service for the Blind in Washington DC, which is part of the Library of Congress.

It is one of a network of 85 special libraries across the United States that provide free loan of public library type books in Braille or recorded format to anyone unable to use regular print material. Anyone who cannot see well enough to read regular print, even with their glasses, anyone with a physical disability that would make it difficult to hold a book or turn pages, or anyone with a medically diagnosed reading or learning disability is eligible for the program.

The library provides popular books and magazines in special long playing recorded cassette, Braille, and digital (flash memory) format.

Books are mailed directly to the patron's home on free loan for 30 days and may be returned postage free by turning over the mailing card. Special format playback machines and adaptive equipment are provided on free loan for as long as patrons need and are using the service.
