Celebrating English Literacy since 1974!
Please see our new website: www.lvtarrytown.org
Many new residents of our villages are unable to speak English. Eager to learn, they come to the library and ask for help from Literacy Volunteers of the Tarrytowns. Our organization has helped many hundreds to speak, read, and write English, but we need more tutors, because there are always more learners - our neighbors - waiting for someone to teach them.
Will you help one of them? All you have to do is complete our online tutor training program. The cost of training is $25.00 which will be refunded to you after 25 hours of tutoring. You do not need prior teaching experience, and you do not need to know a foreign language. If you are nineteen or older, with a good command of English, and a desire to help someone, you can become an ESOL tutor.
Upon completion of the online training program and a two hour in-person orientation session, you will be matched with an adult learner to tutor on a one-to-one basis. A commitment of two hours a week for a year is all that we ask. It is a rewarding experience for the learner and for the tutor. Tutoring can happen in-person at the Warner Library in Tarrytown, or outdoors in public parks or other locations. Many tutors have used Zoom to tutor their learners when meeting in-person is not possible.
Be sure to visit our website - www.lvtarrytown.org to learn more about us. To start the process of becoming a tutor, please email us at LVTtutors@gmail.com!

Description
Literacy Volunteers of the Tarrytowns (LVT) is a group of volunteers helping adults in the Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow community who want to learn to understand, speak, read, and write English. Because of the large number of applications from prospective learners, our organization is always in need of more volunteers. Persons in the community interested in performing worthwhile community service are urged to consider joining LVT.
Founded in 1974, LVT is an accredited member of ProLiteracy America and a member of Literacy New York. LVT is sponsored by the Warner Library, which generously provides space for tutoring, assessment, tutor events and other programs. Literacy Volunteers of the Tarrytowns is one of the few remaining 100% volunteer organizations of its type in New York State. Its board of directors is elected by the membership every two years.
