Donna Miller, Volunteer Coordinator, OPTUM

Evercare Hospice and Palliative Care is currently looking for 11 th Hour Volunteers also known as Vigil Volunteers to assist in supporting patients during their final hours of the actively dying stage. Our hope would be that "no one dies alone". Volunteers will help in creating peaceful surroundings, sharing in silence with patient and family. Offering a calm and peaceful presence, or possibly being an active listener if that is needed. You could play soft music or read something inspirational. It is also important to provide relief to caregivers & family members or listen to family share stories about their loved one. Lastly you can help the family say good-bye to their loved one. Specialized training and ongoing support are provided by our Interdisciplinary Team of Physicians, nurses, socials workers and chaplains. You will need to attend our regular volunteer training class and volunteer as a regular volunteer for a while before taking on the role as a Vigil Volunteer. You will then need the specialized training for the 11 th Hour Program. Before beginning our program you must submit to and pass a 2 step TB test, drug screening and background check.

  • Involvement of an OPTUM Hospice or Palliative Care Physician
  • Unrestricted access to the kind of therapies patients need, including certain life-prolonging therapies, such as radiation or chemotherapy
  • Coordinated care with the patient's physician
  • Assistance navigating the health care system and Medicare/Medicaid certification

  • Pain and symptom management and control
  • Psychological and spiritual support

At the heart of hospice is the belief that everyone has the right to dignity and freedom from pain at the end of life. This is why we are dedicated to creating personalized care plans, which give patients the specific care they need and deserve.

OPTUM Palliative & Hospice Care is Medicare-approved, which means that our services are covered by Medicare, Medicaid, military health plans and most private insurance companies.
