Can you give us a hand?
Help the area's largest community art project this spring!

For the thirteenth year in a row StoneLion Puppet Theatre will hold a giant puppet play, Illuminated Waters at Thies Park south of the Nelson Atkins Art Museum. This free public event is created to bring awareness of global environmental issues in a wonderful artistic setting and spur thought and action by the public on how to make our world a better place. This event is held two evenings with a festival of interactive art projects and earth-friendly exhibitors. At 830 p.m. a giant puppet play is put on using volunteers from the community form ages 2 on up. Following that is a family friendly glo festival of illuminated art, puppets and performers.

We need community volunteers to help carry the puppets int he play which requires rehearsals the week prior. We also need volunteers to run the art activities, set up the festival or help in the glo. Last year we had over 7000 people attend. Time commitment varies from one day only to help in building or rehearsal in the weeks prior.

Mission Statement

StoneLion Puppet Theatre is a professional not-for-profit theater company dedicated to expanding the horizons of the young and young-at-heart through the art of puppetry in an interdisciplinary community of ethnic and cultural diversity.

Description

StoneLion Puppet Theatre is perhaps best known for Illuminated Waters, the areas largest free community art festival where the community actually helps build the giant puppets at our studios and puts the event on. Illuminated Waters 2019 reached over 7000 people.

StoneLion does not have a regular theater season nor does StoneLion sell tickets. We take the art to the audience whether it is one of the 263 performances and workshops given in 2019 locally into schools and libraries or part of our international outreach sponsored by the US State Department. Our latest project sponsored by National Geographic will start this summer in Eilat Israel where were filming puppets underwater in the Red Sea in partnership with For the Seas Productions. This project will create films, PSA's and live events promoting banning single use plastic on the beaches of Eilat and elsewhere.

With Covid-19 we lost 98% of our business but did not stop us from reaching our community, Puppets a Glow Go the city's first drive through art event in September of 2020 drew over 10,000 to the National World War One Museum and Memorial for a reverse parade of giant glowing puppets and aerialists.

StoneLion has twenty-three different productions on our touring roster currently and produces three large scale "giant puppet events" annually.
