About

Enhance and improve the lives of children! Our aim is to empower young people in Samaná by providing a platform at our school where they can be supported in developing their potential and improving their own lives. Our school provides volunteers with the opportunity to make a difference to the young people of our local community whom would otherwise lack educational and creative opportunities, whilst also positively promoting the integration of special need kids into the educational system. At our school we offer volunteers with the unique chance to implement their own ideas whilst also making a positive difference to our community.
We are constantly adapting our activities to weather patterns, children's needs and volunteer numbers and capacities. In addition to established community activities and programs, motivated volunteers who bring ideas for projects have the chance to set up their own volunteer opportunities in Santa Barbara de Samaná with the financial and organizational support of our charity. If you wish to specialize in a particular activity we will do our best to accommodate your personal preferences. However, you can be asked to be involved in a combination of activities which can also require working directly in contact with our beneficiaries, children and young people from Santa Barbara de Samaná neighborhoods.

Activities can include but are not limited to
* Assist with recreational, developmental and therapeutic activities for special need kids
* Help with special events
* Play and take care of underprivileged children
* Assist with maintenance and restoration activities on our school building
* Assist teachers with projects and activities geared to children with special needs
* Have weekly meetings with other volunteers and staff to create weekly schooling plans
* Assist with English classes and computer literacy classes for local youth and adults
* Create your own project or activity

Activities for Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy Students or Professionals
For students of physical or occupation therapy, your skills can be utilized at our special needs school. The children at the school have a range of physical and mental disabilities. The only clinic that provides therapy is too far and expensive for most of the families to attend and therefore with your skills the children can get the therapy they need. Please contact us for more information.

Volunteer Information
We expect our volunteers and interns to dedicate a minimum of three hours/three days per week and a maximum of eight hours/five days per week working in their respective programs. Volunteers/interns usually come by themselves or with their partner to our foundation. However, we do offer family placements as well. In case a family decides to stay with us, the minimum age of the children is eight. Individual volunteers/interns have to be at least 16 years of age. Volunteers/interns under 18 need to bring a written permission from their parents or guardians.

Requirements
No previous experience or special skills are required; all that is necessary is enthusiasm, self-reliance, patience and an open mind. However, volunteers with experience are strongly encouraged to apply. We welcome individual volunteers, families and groups regardless of age, experience or background. You don't have to speak fluent Spanish; we provide free Spanish classes on a regular basis, full support and 24/7 back up. An ideal candidate is proactive, and has a results-focused attitude and is willing to engage in activities with our support, back-up & supervision but on his own in case no other volunteer signed up for that specific same activity during your placement period.

Time Commitment
A minimum of 2 weeks commitment is required
Volunteer placement or internship
This program can be booked as a volunteer placement or as an internship. Please let us know your school or universities internship requirements and we will work out your personalized work plan.

Costs & Benefits
Aldeas de Paz works hard to keep the required financial contribution to an absolute minimum and to offer financial transparency by practicing an open book policy. The calculation of your minimum donation is set up so that the longer you stay the less you give per week. We do this to encourage longer stays, recognizing that longer stays lead to more significant volunteer work and more energy contributed in the form of donated time in place of money! The minimum contribution starts at € 100 per week including double room accommodation at our Aldeas de Paz Guesthouse. For single room add € 20 per week, for fully equipped studio apartment add € 25 per week to the rate. Minimum donation for the Host Family stay is € 180 per week and includes a private bedroom and two meals (breakfast and lunch).

Special Offer
Spanish Language immersion classes - Volunteers or Interns receive 6 free language lessons every week. Classes focus on developing communication skills so that students are able to put their knowledge to practical use as soon as they step outside the classroom. Our teaching method enables students to develop four basic skills: listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. The idea is to learn Spanish in a natural and spontaneous way, just as students have learned their mother tongue. Our students speak Spanish right from the very first day, using it in typical real-life situations: the basic syllabus is supplemented by special exercises, such as role-play, situational dialogues and work projects. Outside the classroom the learning process continues as you are immersed in the Spanish language and culture.
