About Housatonic Habitat for Humanity

Housatonic Habitat for Humanity works with local volunteers and community groups to build homes for low-income working families who might not otherwise qualify for their first home. Habitat volunteers build or rehab homes in its 16-town service area (New Canaan to Washington), and then sells the homes at cost. What makes Habitat unique is that it provides an interest-free loan for the cost of the Habitat home. Its homeowners are hard working individuals who might not otherwise qualify for a traditional mortgage.
As "the bank" -- Housatonic Habitat is very selective of its homeowner families. To date, Housatonic Habitat has built 27 homes improving neighborhoods and contributing to the tax rate.
It also operates ReStore, a thrifty-type home improvement warehouse with items donated by big box store, contractors, as well as individuals. Revenue from items sold contribute to the mission of building affordable homes. Volunteers ... and items for sale ... are always needed.
Housatonic Habitat is part of Habitat International but is locally governed with a Board of Directors, with an Advisory Leadership Council and through the efforts of more than 600 volunteers who contributed more than 8,000 hours this year.
The Housatonic Habitat for Humanity, based in Danbury, CT supports central and northern Fairfield and Litchfield County Connecticut. Habitat for Humanity seeks to eliminate homelessness and poverty by creating affordable housing for those in need.
Some of the tasks volunteers can participate in are home building, ReStore Store support, fundraising, event management, community relations, marketing and communications, web site development, homesite planning, bookkeeping and office support.
The ReStore is a home improvement center where new and used appliances, furniture and home improvement materials are taken in and then resold to the public for much less than the market value.
