Facilitators Needed for Crash Support Group

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Active Transportation Alliance

The Crash Support Group is a monthly support group for victims of pedestrian and bicycle crashes. As far as we know, it is the only support group of it’s kind in the country. In 2010, 4668 people were involved in these types of crashes in Chicago alone. With deepening cuts in mental health care services for the public, this group is often the only opportunity to access mental and emotional support services for our attendees. The goal of this support group is to provide the space and emotional support to help people move beyond the difficulties they face after a crash.

About the Active Transportation Alliance

A local non-profit working to improve conditions for bicyclists, pedestrians and transit users. We advocate for transportation that encourages and promotes safety, physical activity, health, recreation, social interaction, equity, environmental stewardship and resource conservation.

Volunteer Responsibilities

We are interested in assembling a team of mental health professionals to rotate monthly shifts facilitating our Crash Support Group. Ideally, we would like each volunteer to commit to 2-3 groups per year and be available, as needed, if another volunteer is unable to keep their commitment due to unforeseen circumstances. We require at least a bachelor’s degree in a mental health field and some clinical experience. Facilitators need to be comfortable engaging the attendees, containing the group emotionally and maintaining the emotional safety of attendees. This is an excellent clinical opportunity for those professionals beginning their careers and / or seeking clinical licensure.

-Someone who can facilitate 2 - 3 monthly Crash Support Group meetings at our downtown Chicago location each year

-A licensed mental health professional

Mission Statement

The mission of Active Transportation Alliance is to advocate for walking, bicycling, and public transit to create healthy, sustainable, and equitable communities. We envision a Chicagoland that is a fun and healthy place to live, work, and play!

Description

Based in Chicago, the Active Transportation Alliance is a non-profit advocacy organization that works to improve conditions for bicycling, walking and transit and engage people in healthy and active ways to get around.

With support from our thousands of members, hundreds of volunteers and a wide spectrum of community partners, our dedicated team has been working for several decades to create more opportunities for people to travel safely, actively and enjoyably.

Our logo honors our past and points to our future: it is shaped like a bicycle frame head badge, and its three elements represent community, pathways and green space.

We envision a Chicagoland that is a fun and healthy place to live, work and play. We want to reduce crashes in the region by half and and see half of all trips in the area made by walking, biking and transit. To reach these goals, we plan to build a movement around active transportation, increase safety, encourage physical activity, and create a world-class transportation network.
