BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 23 offices across the country ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency through English language classes, job training and placement services, and community participation activities. The Headquarters Resettlement Department provides guidance and oversight for the domestic offices.

PROGRAM: IRC is now offering ESL/Civics classes for eligible Legal Permanent Resident (LPR) from the tri-county region. Each class cycle will run for 12 consecutive weeks and it is expected that all classes will meet 2 times per week for a 3-hour period.

SCOPE OF INTERNSHIP WORK: To provide Civics and Naturalization (NATZ) and English instruction.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS: Assist with group English language instruction and individual tutoring. Actively participate in classroom activities. Model correct English usage for students. Help create supplemental teaching materials and activities. Other related duties as assigned. Actively employ and or acquire knowledge related to immigration and the naturalization process.

REQUIREMENTS: Reliable and flexible Willing to learn about IRC history, philosophy, global work, and local efforts. Willing to learn about cross-cultural communication and ethnic backgrounds of clients. Willing to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies. Exceptional Communication Skills Exceptional Organizational Skills Patience and enthusiasm in teaching others Ability to take direction and work in a group setting Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English; additional fluency in a refugee language preferred. Fluent in Spanish or Creole and English. Basic knowledge in issues related to immigration and naturalization process. The IRC Intern Volunteer Coordinator(s), in conjunction with Dulce Reyes, the ESL/Civics Instructor, will manage the process of volunteer recruitment for the classes, including volunteer job descriptions, if necessary. All prospects should be referred to the Volunteer Coordinator(s).

Description

Since 1960, the Miami resettlement office has resettled more than 10,000refugees, providing them a fresh start and opportunities to use their greatest resources--their motivation, their skills and their experiences--to become independent and self-sufficient new Americans. Currently, the office resettles and/or provides assistance to over 1,000 refugees, asylees, and victims of human trafficking per year in Miami

  • help building job, computer & financial literacy skills
  • education for their children
