Our clients

Imagine living in daily fear for your safety because of war and/or persecution. Constant stress and anxiety dictate your life because you are no longer welcome in the place where you live. Every day thousands of people around the world make the emotional decision to migrate to America. Many of them sacrifice well established careers, the comforts of family and their home country for the opportunity to start over.

While most refugees and immigrants are happy to leave their situations, the transition to living in America is not easy. This is where you come in. We need your talents, passion, skills and service to help individuals and families regain their independence, successfully navigate a new world and integrate into the community.

Family mentors provide refugee families with valuable knowledge and highly appreciated social interaction. Our mentors act as cultural ambassadors, helping our clients feel more welcome in the Orange County community.

Primary tasks include:

  • Support individual in a family with specific need(s). This can be learning English, finding a job or navigating Orange County.
  • Being a friend and support system. Many families are isolated living in Orange County and are in need of a support system.

Requirements:
Family mentors meet with their mentee/family once a week for a minimum of 1 hour. We ask that mentors commit to at least 6 months because we find that our families need consistency and stability.

Support:
Tiyya provides family mentor training, a Resource Guide with information about services offered in the community, and an ESL guidebook.

***MUST BE 18 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER***

About Tiyya

Location:

Mission Statement

We strive to provide community support and educational opportunities for families of refugees, immigrants, and displaced Americans. In doing so, we hope to create a community that fosters the development of self-sufficiency, ultimately helping our program participants overcome obstacles and actively participate in society.

Description

After being uprooted, starting over can be very challenging and emotionally consuming for refugees and displaced families. Newly arrived parents struggle to navigate a foreign system in which basic daily tasks, such as public transportation, doctor's visits, grocery shopping, etc., become challenges. Furthermore, they cannot provide their children the support they need to succeed in school and feel part of our community .

Tiyya is a grassroots organization that provides programmatic support for the whole family. Led by volunteers, our vision is to create a society that is compassionate and understanding of refugee experiences through developing relationships and fostering the public’s engagement.
