The McHenry County Historical Society is seeking docents interested in portraying a one-room school teacher in an original country school on the museum grounds.
The 1895 West Harmony one-room school is available for a 2-hour visit by McHenry County 3rd-5th grade students. Students participate in a 1900 school day complete with lessons in arithmetic, reading, penmanship, grammar, history, and games at recess. Times are 9 to 11 am, 9:30 to 11:30 am, or 10:00 am to 12 noon on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the school year.
The Historical Society provides training (observing another docent and school group), a docent guide with suggested lesson plans, and costumes for our docents to wear.
The 1895 one room West Harmony School has been part of the McHenry County Historical Society Museum since 1988. It is a representation of the type of building and local education system that prevailed in the county until just after World War II.
This is a great volunteer opportunity for retired teachers, historical re-enactors, or theatre majors.
