A Friend of Hillview Library
A Friend works in our children's book sale nook.

Join a team of interesting and fun book-loving volunteers! Choose from a variety of jobs, from sorting donations to shelving, sales and marketing. Every volunteer makes a measurable impact in the funds that Friends raises for the Library's life-enriching programs and services. Friends offers many rewarding volunteer opportunities for individuals, and high school, college, corporate, or community groups of any size.

This is a GREAT volunteer position for someone who likes a quiet space to work by themselves or with a small group of people, and who does not do a lot of customer interaction. Friends also put on occasional book sales at the library (at most, once a quarter), which generate the majority of the funding Hillview Library uses for children, teen and adult programming as well as acquiring special publications or collections. In turn, the book sale space provides the Hillview community with access to high-quality, low-cost reading materials.

We ask that you volunteer at least 3 hours per month. We will train you on the process of sorting and organizing donations, as well as merchandising. Once you are trained, you can work whenever you want, as long as the library is open!

Mission Statement

San Jose Public Library enriches lives by fostering lifelong learning and by ensuring that every member of the community has access to a vast array of ideas and information. San Jose Public Library is a winner of the 2011 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor for museums and libraries. Recipients are selected because of their innovative approaches to public service and the contribution they make to the educational, civic, cultural and economic development goals of their communities.

Description

Hillview Branch Library is located in East San Jose, near the Story and King intersection. We are located right next door to Fischer Middle School and have a rambunctous, lively crew of students who frequent the library. We serve a diverse, vibrant community of all ages, many of whom are native Spanish and Vietnamese speakers. Some of our popular activities include our storytimes, ESL Conversation Club, citizenship programs, and special holiday celebrations like our Halloween party and Posadas with Santa. We have a computer area for teens, children and adults and a mixed-age area; we also have 20 laptops that the public can check out and which we also use for programs. The library has two study rooms that the public can reserve and a beautiful community room with a projector and built-in sound system that is available to rent for free, open community activities. In addition, our library features a classroom space in our Family Learning Center and a separate office for virtual programs.

Public libraries in California seek to engage the talents, skills and commitment of volunteers to serve the communities’ information and literacy needs. Libraries offer a variety of skilled volunteer opportunities to make a meaningful contribution to library programs, operations, fundraising events and other community engagement functions. Skilled volunteers have opportunities to lead projects, work with teams of staff and volunteers, learn new skills, and have fun.
