ORGANIZATION: Congress Heights Community Association

The Congress Heights Community association and the National Capital Parks-East are seeking volunteers to help restore the natural beauty of Shepherd Parkway and undo the effects of years of dumping.

It's as simple as hauling debris out of the woods. We leave it at the curb, and the Park Service picks it up.

We are also working to control invasive species, particularly English ivy.

If you like being in the woods, getting a cardio and muscular workout, and being able to see the results of your work, this is the opportunity for you.

Individuals, families and groups of all ages are welcome.

We have monthly Community Clean-Ups but are also pleased to accommodate groups and individuals who would like to help at other times. After initial orientation, volunteers can work whenever it is convenient for them.

All volunteers receive free orientation, training and equipment. Water and light refreshment are provided.

Documentation of community service hours and letters of recommendation are available upon request.

About Congress Heights Community Association

Location:

3415 5th Street SE, Washington, DC 20032, US

Mission Statement

Shepherd Parkway is one of the largest and most dramatic wooded areas in the District of Columbia. Its 200 acres of federal park land parallel Interstate 295 for two miles with an average width of a quarter of a mile. A steep ridge runs along its full length, inspiring the names of the neighborhoods at its crest: Washington Overlook, Congress Heights, and Bellevue.

Description

The Congress Heights Community Association is partnering with the National Park Service to restore the natural beauty of Shepherd Parkway by removing the vast amounts of trash and debris that have been illegally dumped there over many years.

In the future, hope to do invasive species removal and build a hiking trail running the length of the parkway.
