Help an adult to read, write, and communicate in English. Become a literacy tutor! Training provided. PRE-REGISTRATION is REQUIRED.
Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County is looking for volunteers to become Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) tutors. Volunteers must complete a 12-hour training course during 4 class sessions. Upon completion of training, tutors will be matched with students. Tutoring is usually held at the local libraries in Somerset County.
The schedule for our next Tutor Training class is as follows: Sept. 11, Sept. 18, Sept. 25, Oct. 2, 2020. The mission of Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County is to promote literacy in Somerset County through student-centered tutoring for adults. Our mission is founded on the belief that the ability to read and comprehend at a functional level is fundamental to the quality of life, essential for the protection of individual freedom, and necessary for ensuring the equality of all people. We are committed to accomplishing this mission by: * Training volunteer tutors in the fundamentals of basic literacy instruction which includes reading, writing, listening, and speaking. * Providing tutors with ongoing mentor support and in-service skills development programs. * Locating and recruiting functionally illiterate students. * Creating and maintaining collaborative tutor-student matches. * Helping students to establish and to reach realistic personal goals. * Promoting student self-sufficiency.
Since 1981, Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County has been providing providing free, confidential one-to-one and small group literacy tutoring for adults. In addition to our cornerstone tutoring program, today we also offer free English Conversation Groups and U.S. Citizenship Preparation classes.
