Help an adult learn to read, write, and communicate in English. Become a literacy tutor!

First, attend a Virtual Information Session to learn more.
Upcoming Information Sessions are scheduled as follows:

  • Friday, January 7, 2022: 3 - 4 pm
  • Tuesday, January 11, 2022: 7 - 8 pm
  • Friday, January 14, 2022: 3 - 4 pm

Next, Complete the Virtual Tutor Training Workshop:

  • Attend four (4) Zoom sessions (Fridays, Jan. 21, Jan. 28, Feb. 4, Feb. 11; 3-4:30 pm)
  • Complete 4 online training modules prior to each training session.
Upon completion of training, tutors will be matched with an adult students in need of ESL tutoring. Tutoring is conducted virtually using a video chat platform such as Zoom, in a public place such as the library, or a combination of both.

Mission Statement

The mission of Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County is to promote literacy in Somerset County through student-centered tutoring for adults. Our mission is founded on the belief that the ability to read and comprehend at a functional level is fundamental to the quality of life, essential for the protection of individual freedom, and necessary for ensuring the equality of all people. We are committed to accomplishing this mission by: * Training volunteer tutors in the fundamentals of basic literacy instruction which includes reading, writing, listening, and speaking. * Providing tutors with ongoing mentor support and in-service skills development programs. * Locating and recruiting functionally illiterate students. * Creating and maintaining collaborative tutor-student matches. * Helping students to establish and to reach realistic personal goals. * Promoting student self-sufficiency.

Description

Since 1981, Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County has been providing providing free, confidential one-to-one and small group literacy tutoring for adults. In addition to our cornerstone tutoring program, today we also offer free English Conversation Groups and U.S. Citizenship Preparation classes.

  • Orientation or Training
  • Tutors are asked to commit to tutoring one hour per week for one year.
  • Volunteers must complete LVSC's Tutor Training Workshop: 1) complete 16 online training modules, and 2) attend four 1.5 hour Zoom training sessions.
