The W!se Institute, a program of Working in Support of Education, is seeking volunteers to lead seminars in visual art, creative writing or music for the w!se Institute at the High School for Economics and Finance in downtown Manhattan.
Seminar leaders will design and lead a weekly, one-hour seminar for students on a topic of their choice. The seminars take place Wednesdays for a period of 8 weeks. (Time will be based on availability) Teach an 8-week session on your own, or team up with other people!
Launched in 1993, the W!se Institute holds hour-long, interactive seminars for students during the day each Wednesday afternoon that focus on career skills and opportunities, college preparation and lifelong learning skills. Seminars are delivered by industry experts and faculty. All students receive 32 hours of seminar instruction over four 8-week modules.
The Institute offers a broad range of seminars for students including everything from business skills to conflict resolution, dance and visual arts classes. Here are some examples of recent seminars:
- Internet Advertising
- Public Relations & Speaking
- Haitian Language and Culture
- Robotics
- Quilting
- Playwriting
- Hip-Hop Dance
Seminars may be taught in teams. We encourage the use of guest speakers and welcome ideas for outside-the-classroom learning experiences.

Mission Statement
Working In Support of Education (WISE) is a New York City-based not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to providing services and programs that prepare students for college and the work place with programs that focus on real world learning opportunities, applied learning and financial literacy Founded in 1999 by Phyllis Frankfort, a well-known educator and education policy advisor, WISE helps schools and teachers design, implement and fund programs which engage students, providing real-world opportunities that enhance students' academic experience, and help prepare them for college and the workplace. Wise prepares students for challenges outside the classroom; Ø leadership and civic engagement, Ø financial literacy and responsibility, and Ø college and the work place.
Description
WISE programs and initiatives include: · The Quality of Life Innovations, a project-based learning exercise designed to provide real-world opportunities for students and empower them to make a difference. Under the program, students develop research-based proposals to address particular social issues in their communities, plans to improve the "Quality of Life" in their city. The program culminates in a scholarship competition for students. · The W!se Institute for Lifelong Learning, a model school-corporate community partnership. The Institute provides a college-like seminar series offered once per week for students; administers an extensive workplace skills development program; designs learning resources, and raises funds for student scholarships. · The New York Financial Literacy Coalition, formed in 2000, brings together corporate leaders from finance and banking, non-profit organizations, teachers, school administrators, and parents with one common goal: promoting financial literacy among young adults. The Coalition works to promote awareness, finance-related programs, conferences, curricula, and teacher training.
