One-on-one tutoring helps kids get to grade level.

Become a math tutor - Two hours a week is all it takes

Learning loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted children of color. As the achievement gap widens, elementary school students most impacted by poverty and educational inequity will be robbed of the education they need to build bridges to a better future.

We're looking for volunteers who love kids to do in-person or online math tutoring with elementary school age children.

No prior experience is necessary.
Tutors receive all the training, materials, and weekly coaching required to help a second or third-grade girl or boy gain the confidence and academic skills required to be successful in elementary school, middle school and beyond. Children Rising programs are structured so that it is easy for you to step in and be effective immediately while working in a team environment supported by Children Rising staff and fellow tutors. And the reward of watching a student progress as they reach their potential is priceless.

We invite you to join the hundreds of volunteers...
...who are nurturing and equipping students to rise above the challenges they face inside and outside of school. An engaged, caring community reaching children at a critical time in their life is the key to our approach. Together, we are empowering children in Oakland and surrounding East Bay communities to overcome learning loss, reduce the achievement gap created by educational inequity, and rise to their God-given potential.

"’Children Rising cares so much about these kids that it invests the time and effort to train the tutors and provide us with tools to do a good job."
- Linda Hawkins, Reading Tutor

About Children Rising

Location:

2633 Telegraph Ave., 412, Oakland, CA 94612, US

Mission Statement

Our mission is to nurture and equip children to rise above the challenges created by generations of poverty, violence and educational inequity.

Description

Children Rising is an Oakland education non-profit founded in 2001. Our Community Engagement Model is poised to make a generational impact in our city. We are educating and energizing the broader community; recruiting, training, and supporting an array of highly skilled and experienced tutors and mentors; developing key strategic partnerships with schools and community partners; and empowering thousands of vulnerable children and youth to rise above the challenges they face. Our vision is for every struggling child to be reached by a caring member of the community at a critical time in their life to nurture hope, the courage to dream, and the opportunity to thrive. We empower children and youth attending public schools most affected by poverty, violence, and educational inequity by raising awareness and rallying community support for their needs; and by galvanizing and guiding volunteers to teach, mentor, and nourish the children so they may develop academic and life skills to realize their God-given potential.
