CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is a program of the Child Abuse Prevention Council in San Joaquin County and is the only program designated by the San Joaquin County Superior Court to recruit, train, and supervise CASA volunteers. These volunteers can change the trajectory of a foster child’s life. CASAs act as fact- finders for judges, providing them with information gathered from court documents, social worker’s files, and educational, medical and therapy records. They also speak directly with their CASA youth, family members, school officials, health care providers and other professionals involved in the child’s life. The CASA volunteer then shares this information and their recommendations with the Court. This information is crucial so the Judges can make well-informed decisions about the child’s future and well-being.
The CASA mentors and advocates for their child and in many cases establishes lifelong connections with these youth. In San Joaquin County, nearly 2 children enter foster care a day due to abuse or neglect. Currently, we have 1,700 children in our foster care system. Additionally, the current pandemic has caused even more issues for older foster youth. Some are not sure what the future holds or where he or she will be living next month or next year. Many are suffering from lost jobs or, if they were attending college, a lost school year-including no dorm living.
Even at the height of this pandemic, the CAPC’s Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program is recruiting volunteers to advocate on behalf of our foster youth. CASA volunteers are matched with a foster youth and spend on average 2-3 hours per week with the youth. CASA is prepared to conduct training "virtually" while we practice social distancing.

Description
CASA - A Powerful Voice in a Child's Life
CASA of San Joaquin County is currently recruiting community volunteers to serve as "eyes and ears" for the Court and provide a "voice" for a child; at home, in school and in the court room. CASA of San Joaquin County provides the screening, training and on-going support necessary to be successful advocates for the neediest of children in our County. The CASA volunteer provides continuity by staying on the case until it is permanently resolved. Volunteers are expected to have contact with their CASA child every week, attend court hearings as needed, and provide written reports to the court. The written reports include all interviews, visits, and assessments taken by the CASA in regard to recommendations based on the child’s very best interest.
