BRC

Various programs at BRC are always on the lookout for fun, creative ways to engage our clients. We strive to provide as many different activities as we are able; whether creative writing, poetry clubs & slams, arts & crafts, music appreciation, computer tutoring, movie nights, meditation & deep breathing, life skills, men's "rap" groups, card games, chess tournaments, beginner cooking & nutrition classes, light low-impact exercise, tai chi, trivia games, Bingo, or just about anything else. If you have a hobby or an interest that you're passionate about, and you think our clients might enjoy it, I would love to hear about it! Right now, we look to you, our fabulous volunteers to lead the charge. You don't need to have previous experience, you just need to bring along enthusiasm, creative ideas, and a sense of fun.

Client groups are generally about an hour, to an hour and a half, and tend to be small in size, from as few as two or three participants, to occasionally six or more. Hours and days vary by location. The ideal volunteer would be available to host either consistently once a week, or biweekly/every other week. Because our clients tend to enjoy these sorts of activities, we do ask for a longer-term commitment.

Shifts are available in the lower east side, Chelsea, Bed-Stuy, East New York, East Elmhurst, Jamaica, and more.

Please note, volunteers will be asked for the following:

    • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination and booster prior to your assignment
    • Temperature check upon arrival for your shift
    • Masks must be worn at all times when onsite
    • Regular, ongoing hand-washing during your shift
    • Social distancing guidelines must be followed

Any/all potential volunteers must complete a New Volunteer Registration form, which can be found at our website at www.brc.org/volunteer Once received, you will then be sent an invitation to participate in an orientation via Zoom.

Mission Statement

Helping people reclaim lives lost: We restore hope and dignity by offering opportunities for health and self-sufficiency.

Description

BRC: Helping People to Reclaim Lives Lost. BRC is a leading provider of housing and services to thousands of New York City's individuals in need. Offering a hand-up, not a handout, BRC asks one simple question: What can we do for you? BRC sees the potential in each individual it serves and provides each the opportunity to find it. Whatever our clients may seek, BRC has it, 24/7/365: outreach to homeless people living in public spaces, drug treatment, mental health care, comprehensive medical services, vocational services, and supportive communities in which to live. BRC succeeds by building trust with the people we serve; listening, and then acting, providing housing - both temporary and permanent. Building trust takes time, and a compassionate, dedicated staff of almost 1,000 employees and 1,000+ volunteers that persevere 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, never giving up.
