Seattle Goodwill has pivoted our Job Training & Education (JTE) programs and classes to a hybrid model due to COVID-19. We are offering both in-person (with adjustments and processes in place to follow Washington State and CDC guidelines) and virtual classes for our students in order to provide a safe learning environment and accessibility during the pandemic.
Virtual tutors are vital to adult virtual learners. We know online students struggling with multiple barriers such as obsolete computer hardware, connectivity, computer skills, language, childcare, unemployment, etc., benefit greatly from 1-1 support. Goodwill's JTE Department is looking for select volunteers who are patient, creative, and dedicated to provide one-on-one and/or small group academic support to students in a variety of subjects (ESOL, reading & writing, computers, math, retail & customer service and more) as a supplement to classroom instruction. Virtual tutors will also assist students with assigned coursework to increase students’ mastery of course competencies and coach them on using new digital platforms. Tutoring sessions will occur outside of class time via a digital platform such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide guidance and academic support to individuals or small groups
- Preparatory work before tutoring sessions: identifying current lessons from instructors and creating examples/activities (role playing, practice exercises, reading materials, etc.) based on lesson plan
- Walk through classroom activities and homework in various subjects
- Provide a wide array of examples, depending on the student’s learning style
- Other activities as needed
